From the Editor's desk —
Thank you for your patience. We had hoped to get this "Numisma"
in the mail six weeks ago, but business has continued at an all time
record pace. During 1955, we shall attempt to keep on a tighter
schedule.
It is common knowledge, that, in both our sale catalogs and
"Numisma," much unpublished information appears concerning U. S.
numismatics. Since the recent appearance of a sale catalog (by
another firm) utilizing the Breen Half Cent numbers, several col-
lectors have asked us why we do not copyright the data that we
publish. The answer is obvious — we want to contribute as much to
numismatics as we possibly can. Any money we spend for research or
information is well spent, if we can help our friends to further enjoy
their hobby. The free dissemination of information is good for every-
body; collector, dealer alike. However, we would like to make a simple
request. When material is to be copied from our publications, we
would appreciate a credit line. Where such data is to serve a strictly
commercial purpose, we feel that written permission should be ob-
tained. This is only fair. If our competitors wish to ignore this modest
request for ethical behavior, the numismatic public and trade should
be the judge of their actions and motivations.
Interest in Obsolete Paper continues at a new high. For those who
appreciate the magnificent work of our early engravers, and the
history of the firms and people who contributed so much to an almost
lost art, we recommend the "Essay-Proof Journal." This splendid
quarterly is published by the Essay-Proof Society, and easily ranks as
the finest publication of its kind. Every numismatist who loves the
beautiful vignettes on the early bank notes, should send Five Dollars
to Albert H. Higgins, 70 University Place, New York 3, N. Y. This
Page 49
amount represents the yearly dues of an active member, which in- '
eludes a subscription to the "Essay-Proof Journal."
,r
Among the better known numismatists belonging to the Essay-Proof
Society, we find Fred Boyd, H. K. Crofoot, Doug Ferguson, Dr F ^
Limpert, Dr. J. A. Muscalus, S. K. Nagy, Wayte Raymond, Oscar "
Schilke, Arlie Slabaugh, Dr. Jimmie Sloss, Glenn Smedley, and your "i
editor, among others. '
"Numisma" has a slight backlog of "tough" questions that will -i
eventually be answered. So if you sent in a hard-to-answer problem
child, bear with us.
With best wishes for the new year ... L

THE QUESTION FORUM
We invite our readers to submit any questions or problems relating to U. S.
Early American or Canadian Coins, Medals, Tokens, Literature, etc., including
Patterns, Restrikes and similar material. The questions of most general interest
will be answered in detail here; others will receive written replies on receipt of
a stamped self-addressed envelope.
Ques. Exactly how rore is the 1849 gold dollar with the small
head, and are the circulated specimens that have been making the
rounds reolly impaired proofs os some dealers ore saying? G. P., Pitts-
burgh, Pa.
Ans. There are really four types of Philadelphia Mint gold dollars
of 1849. Type I has the smallest head of the year; the coronet point
midway between two stars, and no L on truncation of the bust. It is
rare in all conditions, certainly the rarest of the four types, and pos-
sibly 1 5 to 20 times as rare as the closed wreath coins. One die
variety of Type I comes only in proof. (When it was published as such,
no non-proofs of the type were known, but we have recently seen
about a dozen from several pairs of dies.) Type II is similar to Type I
in almost all respects, but has an L (Longacre) on truncation of bust.
It is very scarce, but not quite as rare as Type I. Type III is the
regular Open Wreath dollar. It has a larger head, L on truncation,
coronet point closer to star above it. The reverse is as on the first two
types. The branch mint coins with Open Wreath reverse are all of
Type III. Type IV differs only in the wreath, one extra group of
leaves being added at the top of each branch; Closed Wreath. The
relative duration of each type, which gives some hint of the relative
rarity, is given in the following table. The Standard Catalogue will
make a similar listing next year.
1849 Type I. Small head; no L; open wreath. Very rare.
Coinage began May 8, 1 849.
1849 Type II. Similar; L on truncation. Rare.
1849 Type III. Larger head; with L; coronet point nearer upper
star; regular Open Wreath.
1849 O Type III. Three pairs dies sent June 2, 1849.
1849 D Type III. Two pairs dies sent about the same date.
1849 C Tvoe III. Ex. rare. Two pairs dies sent June 1 1 and 13,
1849.
1849 Type IV. Closed Wreath.
1849 C Type IV. Two reverses shipped July 10, 1849.
Summarizing, we find that the Type I and II coins were struck at
Philadelphia only over a period of less than one month (May 8 to
the beginning of June). Type III dies were in use at Philadelphia
during the month of June and the beginning of July; during this period
the dies were shipped to the branch mints. Type IV came into use at
Philadelphia within the first week of July and continued until the end
of the year, two dies being shipped to Charlotte on July 10. This ratio
fully explains why Types I and II are rare; they were in use for only
a coup'e of weeks apiece.
Ques. Can you give me some idea of whot you pay for coins you
need? For instance, would it be possible to give me a rough list based
upon the current, 8th edition of Yeoman's Guidebook? II . /.. Merrick.
N. Y.
Ans. There is a current tendency to overplay (i.e. overvalue) the
so-called popular U.S. coins. This has led to speculative operations
Pane 50
and often misleading "we will pay" advertising. For these reasons,
we have conservatively turned to the less known, odd U.S. series, and
those regular coins that are often unappreciated. Catalog valuations
are at best indicative, and for that reason often confusing. Many
collectors (and dealers) turn to us when selling "important" individ-
ual pieces because our research and study facilities are not equaled by
any firm in the country. The following rough list, in response to your
question, may give some idea of what we can pay, in some instances,
against the current guidebook.

while an uncommonly interesting one, 1784-1866, is sat-

as rare as the regularly issued notes, and considered just
about as desirable, genuine specimens (in many instances)
being unobtainable.
